Japan Account Management

Doing Business in Japan? Then, do it right.

Japan Account Management

When establishing a business relationship with a Japanese company or organization, it is important that they understand your focus on building a long term relationship. Once you build a good relationship with a Japanese company, additional opportunities and deals become much easier to execute on, your new Japanese partners will be focused on your best interest and become a true partner that you and your organization can count on. It is important that American companies do not underestimate the power of these relationships.

Gathering InformationTo develop a “deep” relationship with your Japanese partner, consistent effort must be spent learning about them, their heritage, strategy, position in the market, etc. Often this will position you to understand and identify other opportunities, enhancing both your strategy and position in the marketplace.

Competition in Japan will always exist. Competitors focus on their clients and understand how they “fit” in the marketplace, therefore it is very important to establish favorable relationships with your customers, becoming their trusted advisor so competitors can not easily replace your position within an account. This is extremely important during the early stages of your relationship. Often, the quickest way to accomplish this goal is during face-to-face meetings; where your clients can begin to understand who you and your team are and why they must align with you and your business.

Local Hiring in Japan One way to secure your position in the Japanese market is to establish a corporation in Japan.

We can help companies that need to establish a sales force, customer relationship management system or center, and or account management within Japan by supporting your hiring process, attending interviews, negotiations, providing assessment and analysis of the candidates during the hiring process. When an individual you are hiring has to execute immediately both within Japan and the US, we have the experience needed to understand how these cultures intersect; selecting the “right” multicultural individual is not easy. Often US corporations or organizations hire individuals who might only be successful in either the US or Japan. Some American HR departments have a hard time assessing an individual's competencies in Japan, and they may hire someone simply because they speak Japanese. Just because someone speaks Japanese does not mean they will be successful doing business in Japan. It is never enough to simply speak Japanese, you need to deeply understand how Japanese business works.

InvestmentAs in the states, your company may use a loan or investment or opportunity into Japanese company to develop business connections and a position in the Japanese market. Many factors must be taken into account when evaluating this kind of strategy. As Japanese would fear foreign take-over, unless you bring a clear set of merit for the value to both management and the workers or their union, finalizing an investment into Japanese company may become an uphill battle. Once your company's investment is accepted, it is important to guard and develop this relationship.

Often American companies pass on investment opportunities because they are unfamiliar with the Japanese market or how to successfully conduct business in Japan. Our team focuses on reducing this risk to all of the stakeholders involved within this kind of strategy.

Understand Politics that drive business within Japan In most cases, Japanese top management are comprised of 3 or 4 individuals, a President, Executive Vice President or Fukushacho, Senior Managing Director or Senmu Torishimariyaku, and Managing Director or Jomu Torishimariyaku. The president often makes the final decision in most companies. Depending on a company's HR history or policies, Executive Vice Presidents, Senior Managing Directors, or Managing Directors may be close to retirement, or they may become the president’s successor. Which is why it is so important to understand the internal politics of the senior leadership team. Depending on the company’s corporate structure, senior management is often replaced within a year or two unless an individual is promoted to president. Therefore, it is VERY important to align yourself properly, and implement a good strategic plan to work with middle management and their staff to ensure your position within the account no matter who takes the leadership position. Only account managers that are well experienced in Japanese corporate politics are able to understand and take advantage of this kind of multi-layered clientele.

Communicating with Top Executives Working directly with Japanese senior executives is not easy.To be successful, you must also work closely with executives' secretaries. It is important to keep a close eye on your client to ensure you know about and are ready to attend any special event or other opportunity to communicate with senior executives in an informal setting.

Understanding Top Management A true understanding of the senior team’s vision as well as their political situation is extremely important. Senior executives are often under extreme pressure from competitors, political foes, government, law makers, or even family members. By learning more about the individuals who influence your partner's decision process you will position yourself to work together for many years to come.

Entertainment Strategic entertainment is a very powerful tool to develop strong connections and relationship between Japanese and US companies. You will need help from an experienced Japanese account manager to plan and attend strategic entertainment events that will be instrumental in building a great long-term business relationship.
